EU standard VAT rate changes since 2016
Since 1 January 2016 the standard VAT rate has changed 13 times across the 27 EU member states. This page lists every change with the date it took effect, and the rate each country applies today.

Three of these changes were temporary. Germany (from July 2020), Ireland (from September 2020) and Luxembourg (during 2023) each lowered the standard rate for a period and then restored it.

For each country, the rate that applied from each date. A country with a single entry has not changed its standard rate since 1 January 2016.

Where the data comes from
The rates are compiled from the European Commission's TEDB service and cross-checked against the Commission's own historical rate tables and national sources, because no single source is reliable for past rates. Only standard rates are included. Reduced rates, for example for e-books and newspapers, are not.
